Rangeline Nature Preserve
Anderson, IN This property is an abandoned
gravel quarry that the City of Anderson has turned into a park. One of the
primary designated uses is mountain biking! Currently, there is a network of
trails, mostly created by ATV's. A group is forming now to assist the city
in creating a quality trail system designed for, and by, mountain bike
riders. It is anticipated that there will be an "advanced" loop of 6-8
miles, and a "beginner" loop of 3-4 miles.
Hoosier National Forest, Birdseye, IN 6 or 12 mile loops. The 6 mile loop is the main trail. It is mostly double track to back roads. Fairly easy trail, some rocky sections. Trail stays clear all year. The 12 mile loop is a branch off of the main loop. It is mostly single track and has some good climbs. This section is marked by the little blue arrows. This trail is sometimes grown up in summer. From I-64 go to Exit 72 - Hwy. 145. Go north for 6 miles. Look for sign. Turn east on to a gravel/dirt road. Just over 1 mile look for small road to the right with a gate. Start at the gate.
Brown County State Park West of I65 on State Road 46, East or West of Nashville, IN Indiana's Largest state park has a new MTB trails system. Great trails for all levels of riders. Only 1 hour from Indy, BCSP has activities for the whole family for a day trip or a weekend. Approx. 10 miles of trails and more to come. BCSP has 2 loops connected by a short connector trail. Both loops can be ridden clockwise, or counter-clockwise. Brown County State Park Website
NOTE: BCSP was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal on September 24th 2005:

PO Box 119, #2 Service Road, Henryville, IN 47126, (812) 294-4306 Clark State Forest has five miles of mountain bike trails that are easy with moderate climbs. The trail serves as a good example of a trail successfully hosting both mountain bikers and equestrians. The well-groomed trail itself is a solidly-build gravel and clay path. The wide route has easy grades that allow beginning mountain bikers to tackle some moderate climbs. There are no roots or rutted gullies to interfere with ascents and descents. Most of the climbs are followed by level plateaus that allow riders to catch their breath before the next climb. This trail is a popular choice for equestrians, but there are few horse-damaged sections. Most of this is due to the trail's primarily gravel base. We recommend calling ahead to the park for trail conditions before riding any State Forest trail. Click here for MAP
Doin' It Outdoors,
Liberty, IN The Doin' It Outdoors trails are a network of fun single track with a few stretches of easier double track. There is quite a bit of climbing and technical challenges. There are marked and mapped loops for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The advanced loop is over 7 miles and is quite difficult. There are some shorter very technical loops available for practice and fun. Several more miles of trail are in the planning stages as of spring 2000. Bike rentals, equipment, and sales will be available at a small store at Doin' It Outdoors. They also rent and sell kayaks for use on nearby Brookville Reservoir or Whitewater lake. This would be a great place to spend a weekend riding and paddling. It's a very easy 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive from Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Dayton. From US 27 South of Richmond, Take Brownsville Rd (look for Scagg's Oil) west out of Liberty until the road forks at Patterson Road (look for tree farm sign) Stay right and take Patterson Road to the first left (Byrd Rd.), Doin' It Outdoors is on the left after about 1.5 miles. Cost $3. Only open Friday-Sunday. Not sure if this place is still there.... 6583 E SR 264, Ferdinand, IN 47532, (812) 367-1524 Ferdinand State Forest has nine miles of mountain bike trails that are easy to moderate. The South Ridge Trail takes riders along the forest's largest lake. Other trails take riders to two of the forest's smaller lakes, as well as past an old fire tower. Ferdinand's trails are a nice blend of fire roads and singletrack. There are no horses allowed here, so the trail remains in very good shape with seemingly little maintenance. The singletrack sections can be technically demanding in some spots. Most of the climbs can be ridden, but like most trails in southern Indiana, there are some hills that might require you to walk your bike. We recommend calling ahead to the park for trail conditions before riding any State Forest trail. Logansport, IN 4.5 - 18 MI of trails. Moderate riding. Some flat, rocky areas and some big hills. There is a fee for riding at main entrance. From Lafayette take Hwy. 25 north to Logansport, Take Hwy. 35 north to Hwy. 24. Go west on Hwy. 24 approx. 3 mi. Park to left, Look for sign on the right. Franke Park Mountain Biking Trails Fort Wayne, Indiana There are a variety of trails throughout the rolling wooded terrain in this 280 acre park. The intertwining trails are twisty, turny and challenging, including 1 to 2 miles of short climbs, some steep climbs and ascents, and some fun along the streambed. One trail goes along a cliff by the river, so be careful not to fall in. From I-69, north of Ft. Wayne, go east/southeast on Goshen Rd./Ave. and continue southeast to Sherman Blvd. Turn left (north) onto Sherman Blvd. (following signs for Ft. Wayne Children's Zoo), then turn left onto Park Dr. at J.B. Franke Park sign (before zoo) and follow the road to the Nature Center. Or park at the BMX track for the trails behind it. Approx. 6-15 miles of Single track, Intermediate. Nashville, IN 25 mile trail system. Difficult, Lots of climbing and steep descents. But fun. You can get a map at the General store. There is a small fee. Take 65S to Hwy. 46 West to Hwy. 135 to the south. Approx. 2 MI to Gnaw bone camp. Turn to the left. There is a sign. Park at the store. Huntington, IN Approx. 12 miles This fast, rolling trail circles the reservoir (Huntington Lake/J. Edward Roush Lake) counter-clockwise. The terrain varies from woods to meadow. It has one creek crossing, a couple of technical ravines and a few good climbs. Be aware that the south side is partially open to hunters, so wear orange during hunting season. From I-69 (south of Fort Wayne), take Hwy. 224 West to Hwy. 5 South. Turn left (south) onto Hwy 5 South and, after driving across the dam, turn left (east) into the main entrance (to Little Turtle SRA) at the 2nd DNR sign. The parking area is approx. 1/2 mile down on the left side of the road. 517 North Warren Road, Huntington, IN 46750 (260) 468-2165 Click here for Map (.pdf) Jackson-Washington State Forest/Starve Hollow Recreation Area 1278 E SR 250, Brownstown, IN 47220, (812) 358-2160 Jackson-Washington and Starve Hollow have nine miles of moderate to difficult mountain bike trails. The climbs leading from the Blue Trail's parking area are good indicators for what's in store ahead. This loop seems to have little need for any flat ground, opting rather for an incessant desire to constantly climb or descend. Experienced riders will find these trails to their liking (when dry), while beginners will spend much of their time pushing their bikes, falling and cursing. The well-marked loops have both singletrack and fire road sections. All of it seems to be both technically and aerobically demanding. In fact, many of the climbs simply cut straight up the hills, rather than using any switchbacks to lesson the pain of ascension. What goes up, must come down, and many of the downhills are strewn with ruts and rocks, making the descents more challenging. Riders with good brakes that are comfortable hanging off the backs of their saddles will enjoy these sections. The trail is shared with horses, so keep a watchful eye and keep you speed in check. Because of the horse use and poor trail design, these trails can be very frustrating to ride (or impossible) when conditions are wet and muddy. We recommend calling ahead to the park for trail conditions before riding any State Forest trail. Click here for Map (.pdf) Linton, IN 4 miles of trails. Moderate riding on rolling reclaimed land. From Hwy 37 at Bloomington take Hwy 45 south 14 mi to Hwy445. Take Hwy 445 west 4 mi to Hwy 54. Follow 54 west approx. 25 mi into Linton. After you pass McDonald's, take the next road to the right at the "Sunset Park" sign. Follow CR 100 west 0.7 miles to the Linton Conservation Club. Turn right into the parking lot. Trail Starts up the rock road to the right just past the restrooms. Follow the rock road. There is two different paths to the right. Second one (just up the small hill and to the left) is the start of the longer trail. The two trails weave in and out of each other. PO Box 599, Shoals, IN 47581, (812) 247-3491 Martin State Forest has over eight miles of easy mountain bike trails with moderate climbs. The majority of the mountain bike trails are comprised of fire lanes and fire roads. The result is some of the most easy-going trails in the state. It's a great place to introduce new riders to the sport, or to take your family or young children. The fire roads are wide, and most hills have easy grades and are fairly smooth. The main loop is five miles long and has three shorter trails cutting across the middle. THese shortcut trails are short, but they are more challenging. For example. Trail 2 is only 1.0 miles long, but has a dangerously steep descent and an almost impossible ascent. We recommend calling ahead to the park for trail conditions before riding any State Forest trail. Click here for Map (.pdf) 325 N. State Highway 7, North Vernon, IN 47265, (800) 928-3667 toll free The Park's main entrance and Visitor Center are 1.2 miles from the intersection of US 50 and State Highway #3 & #7. We are less then 15 miles from Interstate 65, and approximately one hour from Indianapolis, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Local riders have been adding some improvements to the trail system over the past couple years. Additional mileage may be added again next year. The reviews by riders from around the state and Kentucky have been great. This years coarse was approximately five miles of technical invigorating woodland trail. Modified loops can be done from one visit to the next. The trail consists of a loop that is mostly difficult, with some moderate sections. Story, IN 8.5 miles (one way) 17 miles of trail total. Fast single track with lots of ups and downs. You can keep your speed to climb most of the hills with ease. There are other trails, but they are designated for hiking. Take 65 South to Hwy. 46 West to Hwy. 135 to the south. Approx. 9 MI to Story, IN. Go past the Story INN. Follow road for 2.7 MI, you will pass a rock road to the right stay to the left. The parking area is about .5 MI from bridge. Parking area is on left , just before a big hill to the right. Permit needed. ICS RIDE #101 Details All the info you need Click here for Map (.pdf) Outback Trail At Imagination Glen Portage, IN The Outback trail at Imagination Glen provides over 11 miles of scenic groomed trails for mountain biking and hiking. There are trail sections appropriate for beginners, as well as for advanced mountain bikers. Questions or suggestions??? Email directly RR 4, Box 214, Spencer, IN 47460, (812) 829-2462 Owen-Putnam has fourteen miles of moderate to difficult trails for mountain bikers. Although Owen-Putnam is the state's second smallest state forest, it has the forestry divisions longest mountain bike trail. The tiny property's off-road path is also one of the toughest. The main loop is primarily singletrack with few level spots, with plenty of tricky descents and climbs that will have most riders pushing their bikes. Opening the existing bridle trail was easy, but tailoring it to knobby tires may take some time. Many of the wet lowlands are badly pock-marked with hoof prints, and consequently, they can turn into large, muddy bogs. Many of the trail markers and signs have been stripped of their bicycle information, and some key markers have been knocked down or removed by disgruntled trail users. Have a good map, such as a topographical map of the area, and a compass, in case you get lost. This is a great trail when navigated properly and ridden in very dry conditions. When this trail is wet, it can be nearly impossible to ride. It's a relatively short drive from Indianapolis (about one hour). Because of heavy horse use and poor trail design, these trails can be very frustrating to ride (or near impossible) when conditions are wet and muddy. We recommend calling ahead to the park for trail conditions before riding any State Forest trail. Click here for Map (.pdf) Rum Village Pathway Mountain Biking Trail South Bend, Indiana Approx. 5 miles of single track for beginner to advanced. This loop trail contains some quick ups and downs, steep (short) climbs and tight turns, with a big jump at the end. The first portion of the trail is mostly intermediate through fast, rolling terrain, while the latter portion has more climbs and is more technical. Directions From US 20 on south side of South Bend: Go north on US 31 to Ewing. Turn left (west) onto Ewing and follow it to Gertrude St. Turn left (south) onto Gertrude St. and follow it approx. 1/2 mile to the trailhead on the right (west) side of street. Park across the street from the trailhead or in the park (which is a little further north on Gertrude St., on the east side of the street). Bandon, IN 6 mile trail. Moderate riding. A new trail was added this winter. Looping around Tipsaw Lake, this trail is mostly flat, with a couple moderate climbs and some rocky parts. It includes a couple challenging stream crossings and a soft, muddy section. Beginners get real mountain biking here (rocky sections, shallow ravines and climbs) without being overwhelmed. It's fun for intermediate riders, too. From I-64 go to Hwy. 37, exit 80. Go south for 6.5 mi. Look for Tipsaw Recreation Area sign. Turn right into park entrance. Stay on main road until you get the lake. Park near beach, trail starts to the right into opening in a field go to the right (up a hill into single track). Indianapolis, On 96th Street West of Allisonville Rd. Nice beginner local mountain bike trail, approx. 8 miles. Great trail for all levels of riders. Good place for beginners and families. Fun for ALL!!!. The trail runs through approx. 160 acres of wooded land along the west side of the White River in Indy. The mountain bike park is on 96th St. (south side), between Hazel Dell Parkway and Allisonville Rd. There are lots of tight twists and turns on this fast trail through rolling terrain., as well as a couple of short, steep climbs and descents, and many newly added log crossings. The trail should be ridden clockwise, and is open from dawn till dusk. This trail is marked and easy to follow. Follow the IMBA rules of the trails. Versailles, IN 70 mile from Indy Turtle Loop; The only easy loop in the system. Starts at the trailhead across from the swimming pool parking lot. 1 mile long, twisty single track thru thick woods with a fire road downhill section. Creekside Trail; 1.4 miles long. Obiviously, it runs very close alongside Laughrey Creek. The toughest trail at VSP, features a very long rocky section that recently had a 20 foot rock armored hill added to it due to a mudslide. Has a 250 foot hill with steep dropoffs. Good sized creek crossing. Center loop; 1.5 miles long. Tight, technical, dense woods, steep hillside sections. 2 small creek crossings. Grandview loop; 3 miles long. Former Fire Road connector trail is now part of this loop on maps. Trail winds in and out of big ravines, uses part of a long fire road. It also has the fastest trail sections in the park, flowing very close to the edge of a 150 cliff, directly above a big horseshoe bend in Laughrey Creek. There is alot of elevation change. Two bridge crossing and many smaller waterway crossings. Thanks to Guy Schwering for the info and all the hard work to make these trails happen. Versailles State Park LINK MAP Bloomington, IN 7 Miles of trails. Moderate riding with some good climbs. Just off 37 to the East on 2nd Street, 1/4 mi from exit. Look for sign on right - Weimer Rd. Take Weimer Rd South about 3/4 mi - turn on rock road to the right, follow for 1/4 mi to parking lot. New Castle, Indiana Westwood is a fun and challenging loop around a beautiful lake, with approx 10 miles of trails, with spectacular views of the lake along the ride. While there are no significant climbs, there is a deceptive amount of climbing. The complete loop has approx 1000 feet of climbing gained in 25 to 30 foot chunks. On an aerobic scale of 1-10, Westwood comes in at about 7, while on a technical scale, Westwood is about a 5. Beginners may get a bit frustrated with the constant up and down and gear changing, but would be able to ride virtually the entire loop. While there is some great flow to this loop, it is not a big ring hammer ride. You will get a work out. Directions from NE side of Indy - approx 40 min drive: Take SR 36/67 to McCordsville, then east on SR 234 to Kennard. DO NOT continue onto 234, but go straight thru onto 200 S until you hit a "T" at 400 W.Go left approx 1/8 mile and take the first right on 175 S. At the next "T", 275 W, take a right and you're there. From Fishers: - Take I-69 North to SR 38 in Pendleton. go east thru Cadiz until you intersect with SR 234/38. Follow 275W until you see the park entrance on your left. Click here for Map (.pdf) Winona Lake, IN (outside Warsaw) The trail is approx 7 miles and growing. This trail is one of three trails currently used as a DINO course in northern Indiana. The trail makes good use of the natural terrain with almost exclusively single track to ride, and lots of elevation changes. There are no long extensive climbs, but enough of short and steep climbs to get the heart-rate up. The trail has some technical sections, but also offers section that are safe enough for the local kids to ride. Directions: Take US31 south from South Bend to US 30 E. Go to Warsaw and turn right on Center St. Once in Warsaw (at the Bob Evans intersection), proceed for 2 lights on Center, and turn left on to Argonne Rd. Go to the stoplight, straight ghrough the intersection and it will become Park Ave. Follow Park Ave. through Winona Lad, past City Park on the right, over a bridge, and then next road on the left is Boys City Dr. Follow Boys City Dr. to the main entrance of the Winona Lake Trail System.
